Editing Session for Powerpoint
Today you will pick a partner and edit his/her work. Read the example of the editing comments below. Make sure you comment, IN COMPLETE SENTENCES, on each individual slide. You will also write a conclusion or have an OVERALL COMMENT section at the end. Your word document should look something like this:

The Myserious Life of Luisa Blanco

Slide #1--Title Slide: I like your use of color on this slide. I also like your chosen graphic.
Slide #2--Your Likes: Nice work! You have just enough writing for notes, not paragraphs. Again your graphics are nice.
Slide #3--Lifelong Friends: This is a good idea for a slide! Again, good use of color. However, a few of your graphics are a little too large. Maybe think about placing them better on the page.
Slide #4--Dislikes: I like this slide, but maybe a more logical order would be to have it follow directly after the Likes Slide. Also, the sound may be a little distracting. It seems like it will go on as you are talking.

Slide #5--Favorite Places: Awesome Slide! Watch your spelling though! It is "Paris" not Pearis :)
Slide #6--Favorite Foods: Yummy stuff. Wait! You forgot a graphic! Ms. Haney said at least one graphic on every page!

Slide #7--Credits: I like that you added a credits slide. And this includes the necessary animation Ms. Haney asked for.

Overall: I also looked over the list of things we needed to include in the presentation, Luisa, and you seem to do everything quite well. Make sure you include the transitions in between slides so you are able to speak directly from it.

FLYER for FIELD DAY!

You are going to create a flyer for FIELD DAY!

Here is the important information you must include:

  • Date: May 13th, 2008
  • Time: 11am-2:30pm
  • Where: Memorial Park
  • List three activities that students will be involved in
  • Include 1-3 graphics. Make one the dominant graphic
  • For more information see Mrs. Rome or a student council member
  • Large title

Helpful Hints:

  • Remember to use the WHOLE page! Use print preview to make sure the layout is balanced. Think about white space.
  • Use graphics that make sense with the subject of your flyer
  • EDIT to make sure all information is accurate and spelled correctly
  • Use fonts that are easy to read. Make sure the size is appropriate so you can read it from a distance

CURRENT EVENTS AND SUMMARIES

Please explore the following links below. They are really great places to get relevant news about our world. Find two articles that interest you that have some sort of length to them (in other words DO NOT CHOOSE ARTICLES THAT ARE VERY SHORT!)

First head your paper with the MLA style heading. After you read the article, put the title of the article centered on your word document after the heading. Next, write a one paragraph summary of the article. DO NOT COPY ANYTHING WORD FOR WORD FROM THE ARTICLE. That would be plagarism!

Finally, in a second paragraph rate the website based upon its usefulness to you as a middle school student. Would you recommend friends to go here? Did you find the information useful and age-appropriate? On a scale of 1-5 (1 being outstanding, 5 being not useful at all) rate this website.

Make sure you write in complete sentences and organize your thoughts. Part of your grade will rely on quality writing and editing.

INTERNET SAFETY

SURFING THE NET
Today we will devote class to an important topic: Internet Safety.

Go to the following sites and read the information provided:
http://www.kidshealth.org/kid/watch/house/internet_safety.html
http://www.indianchild.com/safe_surfing_tips_for_children.htm

Activity:
Your parents think you spend too much time on the internet. They do not see the internet as a valuable tool. They say you can find the information you are looking for just as well in a book. They also fear for your safety as they have read about the statistics of online predators. You must write a short letter to your parents convicing them you understand the rules and safety procautions of handling the responsiblity of being on the internet. Do not use MLA format to head your paper.

When you are finished writing your letter, make sure you have included:

  • at least 5 examples of things you learned from these two articles or from our discussion in class
  • Spell check and grammar check your letter
  • proper Friendly Letter format (click the link to see an example if you forgot)

When you are finished, save your work, print it out, and turn it into the basket.

EXCEL SHEET

Brody has three months to save $1200. Here is his plan. Will he make it?

March:
Must pay $200 to his mom
Must pay $300 for rent
Must pay $100 for his car
He will earn $200 from lawn mowing
He will earn $75 for babysitting
He will earn $775 for selling items on Ebay

April:
Must pay $50 in rent
Must pay $100 for his car
He will earn $300 from mowing lawns

May:
Must pay $60 for tickets to go to a concert
He will earn $20 from babysitting
Must pay $100 for rent

TASK
You must compose a spread sheet with all of the information above. Think about how you would design the spreadsheet. By month? By items he needs to pay for vs. money he owes? Be neat and organized! Make smart choices so your audience will understand it. In addition to including all of the information above, you must also provide the Total for he will have (either positive or negative) for each month and then provide a grand total at the end of how much he will have (it may be a positive or negative number). You will have to generate formulas for these.

Use different easy-to-read fonts and sizes, appropriate column headings, and again, make sure your information is organized in a smart way so if you were to present it, your audience would understand it. You may include only one piece of clip art.

When you are finished, print preview and make sure it is in landscape. In addition, add a footer with your name/date/hour.

A Bit of Fun

You have been working hard lately and should be rewarded. You may go to one of the following sites below after you finish your flyer:

Christmas Wish List

Today and tomorrow you are going to shop for 15 goodies you would like for Christmas. (I know it is early, but it is never to early to shop for good deals!)

In an excel sheet, create a spreadsheet that will have a good design, at least two small graphics, a list of 15 items you would like for Christmas, and how much it costs for each of them. At the end, give a total cost of all the items by setting a formula to have the computer do the math for you.

In addition, create a 3-D Pie chart so that your parents can easily see what item they are spending the most money on.

Finally, in a word document, type a numbered list of all the websites you visited to find your items. See the example below:

Mrs. Ehle's Christmas List
1. An Ipod Nano--www.target.com
2. A Nikon D60 Digital Camera---www.ritzcamera.com

***************
TURN IN:
When you hand in the assignment, you should turn in:
(PRINT PREVIEW YOUR WORK BEFORE YOU PRINT IT OUT!!)
1. he Excel Spreadsheet and the chart together in one document. It should be printed in landscape format. Please print the answers only (No Formulas).
2. A Word document with your items and places you shopped on the internet.

EXCEL--Can you do it?

Aaron has monthly expenditures. He only has $1000 in his budget. Your job is to create a spreadsheet for him.

Here is what he spends his money on:

HOUSE: $450

PHONE: $60

CABLE/COMPUTER: $60

ENTERTAINMENT: $50

GAS: $30

GROCERIES: $150

  1. Make the title of your spreadsheet A1: Aaron's Monthly Expenses.

  2. Then merge cells A1-C1 for the title.

  3. Input column headings for the information above. A2 should say EXPENSES and B2 should say COST. Widen columns as needed

  4. In A3-A8, enter the things he spends his money on and in B3-B8, put the amounts he spends on each of them.

  5. In A9 should say GRAND TOTAL, in B9 use a formula to total up how much he spent for the month.
  6. In A10 should say Money Left Over, in B10 use a formula to show close he is to spending $1000.
  7. Insert a graphic of a smiley face if he has money left over, and insert a graphic of a sad face if he went over his budget of $1000.
  8. When you are finished, please print out one copy LANDSCAPE, with the formulas only. Make sure to add a footer with your name/date/hour on it.
