Christmas Wish List
In an excel sheet, create a spreadsheet that will have a good design, at least two small graphics, a list of 15 items you would like for Christmas, and how much it costs for each of them. At the end, give a total cost of all the items by setting a formula to have the computer do the math for you.
In addition, create a 3-D Pie chart so that your parents can easily see what item they are spending the most money on.
Finally, in a word document, type a numbered list of all the websites you visited to find your items. See the example below:
Mrs. Ehle's Christmas List
1. An Ipod Nano--www.target.com
2. A Nikon D60 Digital Camera---www.ritzcamera.com

SURFING THE NET
- http://www.kidshealth.org/kid/watch/house/internet_safety.html
- http://www.indianchild.com/safe_surfing_tips_for_children.htm
Activity:Your parents think you spend too much time on the internet. They do not see the internet as a valuable tool. They say you can find the information you are looking for just as well in a book. They also fear for your safety as they have read about the statistics of online predators. You must write a short letter to your parents convicing them you understand the rules and safety procautions of handling the responsiblity of being on the internet. Do not use MLA format to head your paper.
When you are finished writing your letter, make sure you have included:
- at least 5 examples of things you learned from these two articles or from our discussion in class
- Spell check and grammar check your letter
- proper Friendly Letter format (click to see an example if you forgot)
- When you are finished, save your work, print it out, and turn it into the basket.

Editing Session
Today you will pick a partner and edit his/her work. Read the example of the editing comments below. Make sure you comment, IN COMPLETE SENTENCES, on each individual slide. You will also write a conclusion or have an OVERALL COMMENT section at the end. Your word document should look something like this:
Creator: Luisa Blanco
The Myserious Life of Luisa Blanco
Slide #1--Title Slide: I like your use of color on this slide. I also like your chosen graphic.
Slide #2--Your Likes: Nice work! You have just enough writing for notes, not paragraphs. Again your graphics are nice.
Slide #3--Lifelong Friends: This is a good idea for a slide! Again, good use of color. However, a few of your graphics are a little too large. Maybe think about placing them better on the page.
Slide #4--Dislikes: I like this slide, but maybe a more logical order would be to have it follow directly after the Likes Slide. Also, the sound may be a little distracting. It seems like it will go on as you are talking.
Slide #6--Favorite Foods: Yummy stuff. Wait! You forgot a graphic! Ms. Haney said at least one graphic on every page!

Friday, September 7th
At approximately 12:10pm, we will take a little break from Microsoft Word and talk about informative, age-appropriate websites that can keep you informed about current events by using the Internet.
- http://www.timeforkids.com/TFK/news ---Time for Kids
- http://www.sciencenewsforkids.org/ ---Science News for Kids
- http://teacher.scholastic.com/scholasticnews/ ---Scholastic News for Kids
- http://cnnstudentnews.cnn.com/fyi/index.html ---CNN Student News for Kids
First head your paper with the MLA style heading. After you read the article, put the title of the article centered on your word document after the heading. Next, write a one paragraph summary of the article. DO NOT COPY ANYTHING WORD FOR WORD FROM THE ARTICLE. That would be plagarism!
Finally, in a second paragraph rate the website based upon its usefulness to you as a middle school student. Would you recommend friends to go here? Did you find the information useful and age-appropriate? On a scale of 1-5 (1 being outstanding, 5 being not useful at all) rate this website.
Make sure you write in complete sentences and organize your thoughts.

FOLLOWING DIRECTIONS
1. Type your first and last name and hit enter. On the next line, type Computers 7 and the hour you are in right now and then press enter. On the next line type the date.
2. Right now, save your work to the folder we created on the C Drive. It is VERY important to save your work periodically. Call your document FOLLOWING DIRECTIONS.
3. Next, highlight all the text you typed in step 1 and hit the right align key. The right align key button is on the top of the tool bar. In other words, hit the key that has all the lines even along the right side.
4. Then press the enter key twice. Now hit the center key. (This key is to the left of the right align button). Now type I LOVE COMPUTERS in bold, Courier font, size 24.
5. Now press enter. Your cursor should still be centered underneath your title. Now in size 14, Courier, italicized font, unbolded, type A BULLETED LIST OF WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO LEARN THIS YEAR.
6. Press enter. Hit the left align key. Press the bulleted list button on the tool bar. Make sure your font is now Veranda, non-italicized, and size 10. Now list three goals you have for computer class this year, with one goal per line. After each goal hit enter. You will notice on the next line, another bullet will automatically appear. This is because you have now formatted it to do so.
7. Now place your cursor on a line in between the date and the title of your paper and center the cursor. On your drop down menus, find the INSERT menu and scroll down to PICTURE and then to CLIP ART. Find a picture that goes along with this sheet about computers and your goals. (Helpful Hint: look up words like “computers” or “goals.” These are key words that may help you find the perfect picture).
8. Now place your cursor after the bulleted list and press enter.
9. Now make a numbered list of at least three different ways you can accomplish these goals you set for yourself. You will find this button on the tool bar next to the bulleted list button. Save your work again.
10. Next minimize your window that you are working in and then minimize the Word window. You will see at the very bottom of your screen you have made them very tiny. You have not lost any of your work. This function allows you to work from various programs without officially closing anything. You are now able to “toggle” between programs.
11. Click on the Internet Explorer button. Put in the internet address: http://designscout.tv/. Press the enter button on the screen. What is the picture that you see on the screen? Type the answer on your Word document in size 36, Garmond font, centered under your numbered list.
12. Press the enter button twice and then press the left justification button. Make the size of your type 10 and your font Webdings. Type all little a’s across the screen in a single straight line. Now highlight the same line and change the size to 14 and continue a second straight line until it ends at the other side by typing more a’s.
13. Press the enter key twice and type the full names (first, middle, and last) of the two people sitting nearest you. Choose the font Impact for the first name and Tahoma for the second, both in size 14.
14. Finally press enter. In your last set of directions you are going to use Word Art to type the month you were born. Go to INSERT and scroll down to PICTURE. Within this menu, select WORD ART. Then you can choose a word art style you like. A box will appear: type in the month you were born and press OK. Once your month appears in your document, there will be small nodes around it. Click and hold down your mouse until it is at the bottom of you page.
15. PRINT PREVIEW your document. Go to FILE, PRINT PREVIEW. Make sure your document is ONLY ONE PAGE! If it is not, check your picture at the top of the page, and make it smaller. This will give you more space.
16. Save your work. Print your document ONLY if it is one page and hand it in to the top basked by my desk.
17. Congratulations! You are finished with your first assignment!
